Underinflated tires increase risk of car crash

According to a new study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers with tires underinflated by more than 25 percent are three times more likely to get into a car crash. Underinflated tires run a higher risk of overheating, leading to tire failure or blow outs.

The study found that five percent of cars studied experienced tire failure immediately prior to an accident. Half of these crashes involved only one car with 45 percent of SUVs rolling over.

Although all vehicles made after 2007 are required to have tire-pressure monitoring systems, the NHTSA says that drivers should not substitute the system for monthly tire pressure checks.
