Eleven patients at the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center in Nashville have tested positive for meningitis, two of whom have died of the disease. The facility has voluntarily closed while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention look into the illnesses.
According to News Channel 5, all of the patients who contracted meningitis are between the ages of 40 and 80 and underwent lumbar epidural steroid injections at the hospital.
The meningitis outbreak has affected multiple states, leaving over a dozen dead.
Fortunately, the form of meningitis found in the patients is not contagious. Meningitis is a serious and potentially fatal disease that causes inflammation or infection in the brain and central nervous system.
