Tri-Cities doctor found guilty of DUI

Earlier this week a Tri-Cities doctor was found guilty by a Washington County jury of driving under the influence. The doctor pleaded not guilty despite failing two of the three field sobriety tests administered at the time of his arrest in November 2010.

The arresting trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol testified that the doctor said the trooper or one of his co-workers may need his help one day and implied that he would not render aid to them.

Officers arrested the doctor after he displayed erratic driving behavior. They say his eyes were blood shot and that he had slurred speech that made it nearly impossible for him to complete a sentence. He must pay a $350 fine, be on unsupervised probation for nearly a year, and forfeit his license.

Passenger faces charges of vehicular homicide

A 21 year-old woman who let her boyfriend drive drunk is now facing charges of vehicular homicide and assault after her boyfriend struck and killed two pedestrians last December.

After a night of drinking, the woman believed her 23 year-old boyfriend was sober enough to drive. After hitting the two pedestrians, he drove over a median and struck a taxi cab. Both could face up to 30 years in prison on vehicular homicide charges.

In Tennessee, vehicular homicide charges can apply to persons who knowingly allow an intoxicated individual to drive. In 2007, Titans quarter back Steve McNair was charged for allowing a drunk friend to drive. He was later dismissed of all charges.

Man charged for Interstate 71 accident

A Nashville man has been charged with drunk driving and murder after a single-car accident on Interstate 71 killed his passenger.

The 51 year-old man told police he had been drinking before the crash Sunday night in Louisville, Kentucky. According to police, his vehicle was speeding down the interstate when he lost control near the Interstate 264 split and rolled several times, landing on its roof.

The 48 year-old passenger was declared dead at the scene due to blunt force trauma. The driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He has since pleaded not guilty to the charges. The man has had previous run-ins with the law, including charges of assault and drug paraphernalia.

Lawmaker charged with drunk driving

Chairman of the Republican Caucus Firearms Task Force and sponsor of a law allowing handguns in bars and dining establishments that serve alcohol has been arrested for drunk driving. Curry Todd was pulled over by police after seen swerving between cars and speeding.

Todd was pulled over near Vanderbilt University where he failed a field sobriety test. Officers say he was slurring his words and was unsteady on his feet. They also found a loaded .38 caliber handgun between the driver and passenger seats. He has been charged with drunk driving and possessing a handgun while intoxicated.

Todd, who is also a retired policeman, has since resigned as chairman of the firearms task force. He was released after posting $3,000 bail.

Driver charged with vehicular homicide

A Nashville woman, with a long history of DUI offenses, has been charged once again with drunk driving and now with vehicular homicide following a deadly accident that occurred in July. The woman was intoxicated and speeding when her vehicle struck another car, killing a 4 year-old child, his grandfather, and injuring one.

Officers say she had a blood alcohol level of 0.25, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08, and was driving nearly 60 mph in a 30 mph zone. Since her criminal history includes four arrests in the past four months, the judge has not set a bond and she will remain in jail until the trial begins in December.
