In some foods containing organic brown rice syrup, such as organic baby formulas, cereal bars, and energy shot drinks, researchers at Dartmouth College have found traces of the carcinogen arsenic.
Brown rice syrup is a sweetener often used as a substitute for high fructose corn syrup. In one brand of baby formula, researchers found levels of arsenic six times the amount the EPA allows in drinking water. Infants exposed to high levels of arsenic could suffer from lower IQs and lower intellectual abilities.
The FDA is currently testing rice products, such as rice cakes and rice cereals, to evaluate the risks and levels of arsenic.

4.9 million Avaria contact lenses, made by CooperVision Inc., have been recalled due to a possible oil contamination. Tests failed to meet quality standards due to silicone oil residue.
Avaria brands affected include Avaria Sphere and Avaria Toric. The FDA has listed the contamination under Class I, which is the most serious warning. Products recalled under Class I could lead to problems such as severe adverse health reactions or even death.
Nearly forty consumers complained of hazy vision, pain, and some suffered torn corneas. CooperVision Inc. has been criticized for not making the recall more known to the public. The company expects to spend about $23.2 million on the recall.
The Food and Drug Administration are still investigating Jensen Farms, the growers of thousands of cantaloupes contaminated with listeria, but have released its initial findings.
The investigation found that there may have been several practices in the packaging facility that could have spread or harbored listeria-containing bacteria. It found that equipment used to wash the cantaloupes was difficult to clean, water often pooled on the floor, and the fruits were not pre-cooled before being placed in cool storage.
Experts claim this is the deadliest food-borne contamination in American history. Over 120 people have died and more than 125 people have fallen ill across the country from listeria-contaminated cantaloupes. The numbers are expected to rise within the next few weeks.
Cantaloupes grown at Jensen Farms in Colorado have been linked to thirteen deaths and seventy-two infections in eighteen states due to a listeria outbreak. Jensen Farms has recalled its entire 2011 cantaloupe crop.
The government has issued a federal investigation into the outbreak, searching for possible water or animal contamination and examining Jensen Farms’ cultivation processes. Several families have filed lawsuits against the growers as well as their local grocery stores where the tainted cantaloupes were purchased.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expect the death toll and number of infections to increase over the next few weeks, as listeria has an incubation period of several weeks before it develops into listeriosis in the body. The young, elderly, and pregnant woman are most vulnerable to the infection since they have compromised immune systems.
