Millions of contact lenses recalled

4.9 million Avaria contact lenses, made by CooperVision Inc., have been recalled due to a possible oil contamination. Tests failed to meet quality standards due to silicone oil residue.

Avaria brands affected include Avaria Sphere and Avaria Toric. The FDA has listed the contamination under Class I, which is the most serious warning. Products recalled under Class I could lead to problems such as severe adverse health reactions or even death.

Nearly forty consumers complained of hazy vision, pain, and some suffered torn corneas. CooperVision Inc. has been criticized for not making the recall more known to the public. The company expects to spend about $23.2 million on the recall.
