Millions of defective surge protectors recalled

Some 15 million defective electrical surge protectors sold in the U.S. that may overheat are being recalled by Schneider Electric IT Corp due to fire risks, a report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission stated on October 3.

The recall affects the “SurgeArrest” series 7 and 8 surge protectors that were manufactured earlier than 2003. Hundreds of complaints reached the company’s office reporting incidents of overheating and melting of the product. At least $1.7 million worth of damages affected home and medical properties were damaged and 13 people sustained burn and smoke inhalation injuries due to fires.

Consumers have been warned to avoid using the surge protectors that were manufactured in China and in the Philippines from 1993 until 2002, and return the product for a replacement.
